All of the Dungarees that the Cool kids are Wearing rn

No matter the age, era or current trend, dungarees and overalls have remained a mainstay in every stylist’s arsenal. In this insert, we investigate what makes this all-in-one wonder so iconic and downright prolific throughout the years.

1940s ─ traditionally, overalls were worn by farmers and carpenters.

1960s ─ introduces dungarees for fashion in an array of groovy styles and different textures other than the standard denim.

1980s ─ say hello to oversized fits and print overload, styled with dad sneakers and quirky-yet-somehow-trendy add-ons.

1990s ─ the ‘90s brought forward a denim revolution in the form of acid wash, patchwork and distressed styles. The nostalgia.

2000s ─ The aftermath of the ‘90s revolution invoked daring styles accompanied by an anything-goes attitude that we all miss.

So what does 2018 have in store for us regarding dungaree trends?

Let us begin by saying that there is no definitive style that’s making a comeback ─ all of them are back and just as trendy as the last. Denim, chino, cotton, leather, sophisticated, sporty and everything in-between ─ we’ve already begun to revive all of our favourites.

Speaking of faves, this is how our top influencers and celebs are styling their dungarees this season:

Play it cool & casual

Thanks to their versatility and overall comfort, dungarees are most commonly styled as casualwear. Paula Bee pairs hers with a yellow oversized tee and low block heels and we truly can’t think of a more comfortable combo than this.

Dress it up

It’s a common mistake to restrict overalls and dungarees solely to the casual realm when the styling possibilities are endless with them. With a little bit of thoughtful layering, sophisticated add-ons like heels and the right accessories, you can make this popular throwback a smart staple, too. We like styling them with a blouse or a plain white shirt and stiletto courts or sandals for a sophisticated look.

Go retro

No one can forget the iconic ‘90s where girl RnB groups absolutely nailed co-ordinated dungaree sets. Pile on the baggy fits, the tie-dyes, the camo print, the acid wash and the crop tops ─ we’re taking it back to the ‘90s this year.

Laid back

Summer’s all about playing it cool and dressing breezy, so opt for a lightweight cotton dungaree and style it with a plain white tee to keep it sweet and simple. We’re seriously crushing on tan leather sandals and basket bags, so you best complete your outfit with these add-ons for a bang on-trend summer look.
