Closet Control | Sorting your Cupboards

Ever covet a movie character’s immaculate closet? Ever utter the words, ‘I have nothing to wear’? Between the neat arrangement and colour co-ordination there is method to the madness that is organising your wardrobe. Below we would like to list a few how to clear or organise your cupboards.

Break it up

Categorising your wardrobe from favourite to least favourite items, colour co-ordinating, and sorting pieces from new to old are all techniques that will help you turn your closet from a black hole into a manageable style station.

By season

In the same vein, and just as easy, is separating winter and summer clothing. Shelving space in cupboards often have more depth than width, so switch your summer piles to the back of the shelf and bring your winter items forward for the current season and rotate them accordingly throughout the year so that you have easier access to the items you need.

Colour coding

While undeniably pretty, and drool-worthy in some instances (ahem, Pinterest), sorting your clothing by colour will help you have a better handle on locating stuff in your wardrobe. Looking for that oxford blue shirt for a preppy work ensemble? No problem! Check the right end of your hanging space among your blue pieces. It’s that simple.

I can be a (neat) freak

Okay, let’s be real: very few of us have the energy time to fold our clothes the retail way – you know, that painstakingly perfect, rigid way where all the ends line up and every last piece is compressed within an inch of its life. Alas, it is the way. So make it through your sighing and heaving, whichever you prefer, and try folding your clothes in more or less the same size and shape, with seams facing away from you, and the folded ends facing you. This will make stacking things a breeze (trust us!). Also, be sure to keep thicker items at the bottom of the pile and work your way up.

Space out

If your closet doors won’t close because you’ve got too much stuff, it’s time to toss some things out. Invariably having an overstocked closet leads to having ‘nothing’ to wear. Thankfully, the best way to gain more space is to simply create more space, but be sure to do so in a visually appealing way. One of the best methods trending at the moment is making use of a standalone clothing rail. This is especially great for creating looks by week, and adding a decorative touch to your bedroom. If you do every come across that “what to wear” thought you can always view our guide.

DIY so fly

You could do with extra hanging space, and to nail it (see what we did there?) try adding rods or hooks to the back of your cupboard doors. They work especially well for odd items and accessories like belts and scarves. A similarly effortless hack for the bottom of your cupboard or beneath your chest of drawers would be to add a flat tray to stack your hoard of shoes on top of.

Hang ten

Shelved items, while great, and eye-catching – see above – can pile up quickly. Plus, there’s the added hassle of having to iron deep-set wrinkles and creases out of them. Give yourself a break twice over by using shower rings to hook them around the bottom of a triangular hanger, and using it to hang your tank tops or even scarves.

Floorless?

Maximise floor space in your cupboard by getting small sets of drawers for smaller, awkward items such as caps or bags. The best part of this option is that you still get to use the top of those drawers as an extra surface to stack things on. Another method would be to simply add a light to your closet to make the space appear bigger than it is.

Maximising that negative space in your closet will make all the difference in how much you’ll be able to store. Sometimes all that space needs is some TLC and neatening up. By keeping all your goodies structured and in order, who knows how many more Zando purchases you’ll be able to make.
