Help! I’m stuck in a winter style rut

It’s almost a month on from the winter solstice and it is safe to say that cold weather, windy nights, and frosty mornings are beginning to get stale. This compounded by the extension of the lockdown restrictions has put style at the bottom of the priorities list. The depths of winter are probably making you feel like you’re in a style rut and has you reaching for the old faithful outfit of sweats and sneakers. But there are so many ways to invigorate your winter wardrobe in preparation for the easing of lockdown or even for a walk to your local coffee shop.

Although getting dressed takes on a purely functional purpose during lockdown, you’d be surprised by how throwing on a great winter outfit that is both comfortable and stylish will invigorate your mood. Read on to find out how to get creative with your clothing and defrost your winter wardrobe creativity block.

Up your jersey game

Instead of throwing on your trusty oversized knitted jumper or sweatshirt, wear a knitted or cotton camisole underneath a chunky knitted cardigan of the same colour. This classic look will make you feel put together while emulating the Khaite cardigan look seen on the like of Katie Holmes.

Slip-on a dress

A satin slip dress is a surprisingly universal piece that is great for layering during winter. Throw it over a long sleeve t-shirt or layer it under a warm woolly turtleneck instead of jeans. A slip dress will elevate your style without compromising on comfort and ease. You can keep it casual by pairing your slip dress with sneakers or dress it up with boots.

Jump, jump, jump(suit) around

A jumpsuit is the easiest piece of clothing to throw on because it does all the work for you. It requires minimal styling and is warm as is, but extra insulation can be added with a T-shirt or turtleneck. Add a small scarf and a pair of boots and you’re ready to brace the chilly weather!

An oversized shirt

An oversized shirt is a key piece in the layering game. It looks great over a turtleneck or buttoned up with a small scarf tucked into the collar. The great thing about an oversized shirt is that the size allows for movement and is not constrictive. It can also be worn with oversized earrings and warm tracksuits pants while on Zoom calls- no one will know.
