Make a Natural Face Mask | How To

Self-care is about more than just listening to Sza and taking long bubble baths. It’s about taking care of your inner wellbeing and making healthy lifestyle choices to ensure that you remain in good spirits ─ mentally, emotionally, spiritually and holistically.

Take time to unwind, do the necessary detox every now and then, block that douchebag and, most importantly, take care of your skin! Because we know that going to the spa more than once a month just isn’t viable for most, we’ll lend you a few easy (and natural) face mask recipes to get you started on your self-care journey ─ and the best part? They’re all homemade!

For Dry Skin

You’ll need:

• 2 tablespoons of honey
• 2 tablespoons of avocado
• 2 tablespoons of olive oil
• 1 mashed mango

Recipe:

Mix all of the ingredients together and then apply it onto your face. Leave it on for 15 minutes and thereafter remove the mask with a warm facecloth.

Merits:

Avocados are a modern-day treasure and millennials will concur with this statement. Apart from their yummy goodness, they’re also super advantageous in skincare. According to celebrity facialist, Joanna Vargas, “Avocado is loaded with omega-3 fatty acids and B vitamins, which are incredible for your lymphatic system and restoring the skin’s lipid layer.” Honey moisturises and hydrates your skin, while the vitamin C-rich mango brightens and olive oil softens and reverses the signs of sun damage with its anti-inflammatory properties.

For Exfoliation

You’ll need:

• 1 tablespoon of finely ground espresso beans
• 1 tablespoon of honey
• ½ teaspoon of aloe gel
• ¼ teaspoon of fresh lemon juice (optional)

Recipe:

Mix the coffee grounds and honey into a smooth paste. Then, add the lemon juice and aloe gel and proceed to mix again until everything is well-combined. Apply the paste to your face and leave it to set for 10 minutes before washing it off.

Merits:

Rachel Winard, founder of Soapwalla , swears by the tightening and exfoliating effects that caffeine affords. Aloe calms inflammation and, together with the coffee grounds, these make for a gentle exfoliating combo.

For a Natural Glow

You’ll need:

• ½ of a banana
• 1 tablespoon of orange juice
• 1 tablespoon of honey

Recipe: Mash the banana into a small bowl and then add the tablespoons of orange juice and honey to the blend. Mix the contents into a smooth pulp and then apply the mask to your face (lumps are fine BTW). Leave the mask on for 15 minutes and then rinse the mask off with lukewarm water. Moisturise afterward.

Merits:

Suitable for all skin types, this mask provides a natural healthy glow and leaves it feeling soft and moisturised. Most of these masks are super easy to make and you likely have all of these ingredients in your kitchen already.
