MBFW 2017 Joburg: The Facts and The Fineprint

Fashion fiends in the Johannesburg metropole can rejoice in style once more as the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week fast approaches, with events primed to start on the 17th of August 2017 .  This year promises to give new and prolific designers a platform for showcasing their collections (which will no doubt shape our fantasy closets for the Spring/Summer fashion trends seasons).

Marking its 10 year anniversary, the African Fashion International, owner and operator of MBFW, promises an exciting line-up to celebrate Africa’s fashion and design successes on local and international runways. A mix of SA legends, alongside up and coming fashion designers, will be showing their carefully tailored handiwork over the 3-day period in which lovers of the trade are able to come out and support their favourites.

The tried and tenured

David Tlale

A notable name in the local fashion industry, David Tlale’s 15 years on the scene has afforded him a keen following, while his approach to design, which hinges on intricate details, textures and a little bit of drama, continues to leave audiences in awe. His Autumn/Winter collection featured a theatrical combination of Victorian detailing, plush fabrics in soft grey hues with accents of berry and metal.

Marianne Fassler

The quintessential style heroine, if ever there was one, Marianne Fassler returns to the stage with her iconic afrocentric designs which showcase a distinct use of colour and print. The look she is known for is a direct result of her unconventional take on fashion, and we’re certain that the Spring/Summer collection will not disappoint.

Leigh Schubert

Another juggernaut in the fashion industry, Leigh Schubert is known for her novel, layered silhouettes and playful contrasts of soft and luxurious fabrics and patterns. The regularly editorialised Schubert pays special attention to fit and form, promising to indulge her audience with a magical array of garments to succeed her 2017 Autumn/winter collection which played on the monochrome trend, rich jewel tones and asymmetry.

Look out for…

Making their runway debuts are Sheria Ngowi from Tanzania, Chidinma Obairi from Nigeria, and Vizuvlgvds from the United States.

Not only are all in attendance treated to the best and boldest designer collections, but it’s an unmissable opportunity for many fashion savants to throw together their most inspired looks and give passers-by a head-turning introduction to the local melange of street style.

More than in-vogue silhouettes or seamlessly stitched garments, this unique celebration of African design is forged by the exhibiting collective that actively redefines style and international trends with home-grown heritage and soul. It puts on display the local industry’s spirit of creativity, allowing spectators to take part in the visionary process behind the clothing, from inspiration to production.
