Millennials can’t get enough of these brands

When it comes to shopping for a millennial, it’s important to note that everyone has their own go-to brands that they’re loyal to. There is no uniform aesthetic and there isn’t one certain trend that everyone’s buying into. Being a millennial is about embracing diversity and celebrating the unique.

With a world of brands to shop and a plethora of new ones making their come-up, millennials are also spoilt for choice in terms of what to buy, what to wear, who to stan and who to cancel ─ we’re pro-choice.

To find out which ones are worth investing in, we turned to some of our favourite millennials to see what’s in their carts.

For me, I stan adidas. I like that some of their products are modern, but also sleek. For example, I think the Gazelle sneakers are timeless, from Kate Moss wearing them in the ‘90s to street style stars rocking them now ─ they’re perfect. I reckon the brand really has its ‘finger’ on the pulse because of how well they appeal to millennials (one scroll through Instagram is proof of this). When minimalists and maximalists can find something they like from one brand, I think that makes them a winner.

I love Puma. How can you go wrong with Rihanna as a creative director as well as Jay-Z who was recently appointed as the creative director of Puma Basketball? The brand has evolved over the past few years, embracing the millennial’s love of non-traditional sports and lifestyle looks. From Fenty Slides, Creepers and Bow Sneakers you can’t deny that Puma is a brand for the coolest generation!

As a millennial and a woman, I am always painfully aware of my stance in society. I usually dress to express and I believe that there’s nothing more self-expressive than having a slogan across your chest to say who you are and what you believe in. I am all about supporting local and empowering my fellow womankind, so naturally, my favourite brand right now is T-shirts for Change as they do both of the above. For every T-shirt sold, 50% of proceeds are donated to charity and that makes me feel good to know that I can make a change in a small way and start a conversation about important issues like women’s rights at the same time.

I love Nike as a brand because it has shaped me as a creative and it also made me into the sneakerhead I am today. Nike sneakers have been my go-to’s ever since I received my first pair as a gift from my parents as a kid in the ’90s. They were a pair of Airmax ’90s and all the cool kids were after these kicks as I was growing up. From then on, I never looked back and never chose another brand. To me, a day without the Nike swoosh is equivalent to a day without smiling ─ inconceivable. Being a millennial is cool because you get to rep the same brand every day and influence others to also wear it and showcase their own individual and amazing styles.

I love Sissyboy because it’s one of the few brands in South Africa that caters for my body type. My body is disproportionate in the sense that my bottom ‘half’ makes up for 70% of my body so finding clothes that fit and don’t make my legs two metres long can become quite a mission. What I’ve found with all of Sissyboy’s clothing items is that it seems to have been made for me. The pants fit perfectly without any ‘bubbles’, the skirts are not too short, the dresses accentuate my body and the jackets are the perfect length.

The one thing that instantly comes to mind about my generation is that we really don’t tolerate or stand for anything less than what we deserve. We are the generation that stands up, quite fiercely at that ─ for what we believe in. Our generation refuses to stand for what the generations before us did, and I applaud that the most.

Levi’s has gone from one generation to the next. Old or new, it never goes out of style. I also think that this brand is extremely versatile ─ whether you’re matching a plain white tee with skinny bottoms or a Levi’s T-Shirt with a funky pleated skirt, it would work either way.

What I love about my age is that you get to experience and explore everything that your heart desires without judgement, you’re at your peak, you have just enough experience & knowledge, but also have the canvas in your hands to mould your own life.
