Party Dressing ─ What to Wear on NYE

Chances are you know what you’ll be wearing on New Year’s Eve (NYE), or at least an idea of the type of look you’re going for. As soon as you had an inkling of what your plans for the night were going to be, you more than likely had at least one piece in mind that you absolutely knew you were going to wear. It might be your trusty LBD, a pair of embellished heels that would have Cinderella weeping with envy or a pair of earrings so gem encrusted you might just blind someone should any lights hit you at just the right angle.

Whatever it is you’re decided to wear – or to build your look around – the outcome you and the rest of us want for our NYE outfit is the same; to look our absolute best, to ring in the new year letting the old one know it didn’t get us down and we’re up for any challenges the new one can throw at us. To do this there is one rule that has to be followed – don’t look ridiculous! Looking ridiculous is a very real possibility if the look you’ve decided on isn’t balanced. Great big statement earrings plus a dress that’s short, tight and sparkly plus make-up to rival any queen on Drag Race might look awesome strutting down a runway or on a minor Kardashian. And that’s where it should stay.

If you already have that one special piece that is absolutely going to see in the new year with you, you’ll want the rest of your look to enhance that piece, not distract from it. That pair of sparkly chandelier earrings you’ve been dying to wear is best complemented by clothing that is sharp and sophisticated, and what better excuse can there be to buy a new LBD or jumpsuit.

A little black number isn’t going to be everyone’s favourite, and nor should it be. Toning down your accessories just a tad gives you licence to play with colour, print and that perennial NYE favourite – sequins – in your clothing choices. Here’s your chance to try the new craze for all things leopard print.

New Year’s Eve is also a time to be a little experimental and stand out from the crowd somewhat. Ditching the dress has traditionally meant opting for a jumpsuit or a statement blouse and trouser combo but this season there is thankfully a further option to consider – the matching set. A top and bottom set that has a silk pyjamas feel to it looks both fresh and fashionable. As a bonus extra it’s also a heck of a lot more comfortable than any bodycon dress out there.

There’s nothing quite like a pair of stiletto heels to perfectly finish a look; they’re sleek, sharp, sophisticated and sexy. If you’re worried however that your big night of partying might just turn hellish after a few hours in your favourite stilettos, might I suggest a pair of platforms or block heels? Their retro styling is perfect for the season and they might just be comfortable enough to keep you partying till sunrise. Whatever type of shoe you decide on though, there is one golden rule that seems obvious but I’ll say it anyway; do not wear a new pair of shoes for the first time on New Year’s Eve! They are bound to be murder on your feet and you’ll probably be hobbling before the clock strikes twelve. Not a great way to start the new year.
