Spring beauty trends to know and try

Ah, spring! What a wonderful time to do some decluttering and spring clean your make-up bag, bathroom countertop and vanity.

After 18 months of being in continual, albeit different stages of lockdown, there are a number of beauty and skincare products that you may not have used – or no longer want to use. In with the new and out with the old, we say! Here are the spring beauty trends to know and try and, well, buy!

Eyes

We’ve been wearing a mask for the better part of 18 months. Eye make-up –  bold, playful, dramatic, and graphic – has surged in popularity. Coincidence? I think not. While eyeliner and mascara will continue to be a staple in any make-up bag and your repertoire, we’ll see strong eye looks with brighter and bolder colours and metallic glitter shades done with fearless application. Yay! Make-up is fun again!

Smudge-proof lips

Calling all lipstick lovers! While wearing a mask has hindered our ability and want (be honest, you don’t want to risk smudging and wasting your lippie on a mask) to wear our favourite lip colour, there’s something about the sun (and the vaccine rollout) that makes you want to add that pop of colour to your mouth again.

Enter the smudge-proof lip colour. Thanks to long-wear formulas and the blurred lips trend you can wear a bold lip. Just like your eyes and your clothing (dopamine dressing anyone?), your lips should be bright, playful and colourful just like the flowers blooming around you.

Low-maintenance brows

The lockdown left many of us without our trusty salon treatments and therapists. Like our hair, our brows grew wild and gorgeous. All of a sudden seeing a *gasp* natural brow was perfectly normal.

This relatively low-maintenance trend wants you to accentuate your natural shape and hair colour. Brush your brows with a spoolie, fill in the sparser areas using the product of your choice and a very light hand to recreate hair-like strokes.

Natural skin

Your make-up routine is about to be stripped back. Natural, healthy, glowy skin is the ultimate foundation. You only want to use just enough foundation/concealer to cover spots, redness or dark circles. And with the right nighttime serum seeping into the skin overnight, you’ll achieve youthful-looking skin with a lovely glow.

A sugar scrub will help eliminate dead skin cells, and a hydrating and illuminating primer will, well, hydrate and illuminate your skin prepping it for any make-up you do put on. Swipe on a few drops of liquid highlighter on the high planes of the face and buff for a natural-looking glow.

Floral fragrances

It’s time to stop and smell the roses (and the jasmine, the freesia and the peony). There’s nothing like a new fragrance to help mark the start of a new season. We know, we know, floral notes, for spring, groundbreaking! While floral fragrances are generally quite light and flirty and mostly intended for daywear, finding scents layered with notes of sandalwood, leather and musk offer a more sensual scent that’s great for evening wear.
