Sun Met 2018 – Style Ahead of the Field

Marking their 134th edition with 13 powerful racing events, the Sun Met (formerly known as the J&B Met) is a much-anticipated event on every socialite’s calendar.

Taking place on the 27th of January 2018, this prestigious event is set to be an epic affair of fashion, glamour and panache at the Kenilworth Racecourse in Cape Town.

Celebrating the good life in style is what the Sun Met does best, so it is only fitting that they have partnered with G.H. Mumm to bring you the most sophisticated soiree south of the equator. With esteemed guests and world-class entertainment, the 2018 Sun Met promises equestrian-inspired elegance like you’ve never seen it before.

The Sun Met 2018 Theme

This year’s theme has everyone excited as it allows us to play around with colours, prints and textures inspired by our beautiful continent – yes, that’s right, this year we are asked to express ourselves in afro-chic glamour. ‘Style Ahead of the Field’ brings forth ideas of bold colours, loud prints and over-the-top details. Following on from last year’s ‘Decades of Glamour’ theme, 2018 ups the ante with its inclusive and relatable theme.

What you should be wearing:

Keeping this year’s theme in mind, you’ll want to showcase the best that local flavour has to offer. Gert-Johan Coetzee’s gowns offer regal flair with ruffles and embroidery and African Style Story evokes classic elegance in jewel tones and full skirts. If you are looking to outshine the rest, then opt for any of City Goddess’s metallic gowns and complete your outfit with some flashy headgear for that authentic glamazon effect.

It’s all about the details, darling!

They don’t call it the most stylish racing event for nothing. If you’re attending, you’ll want to go all out with over-the-top accessories and shoes, so spruce up your outfit with a little bit of shine, sparkle or shimmer.

Things you need to know:

1. There are accolades to be won

Going to the Met is like getting to relive your matric dance all over again – only this time around your more mature, sophisticated self will be ready for any and every photo op. While there is undoubtedly no shortage of good looking people in attendance, there will be prizes handed to the best dressed fashionista so take advantage of this chance to shine and come dressed to the nines.

2. Which horse do you bet on?

Before we get carried away with the fashion and grandeur, we can’t forget about the main event – racing. A total of thirteen races will be taking place on that day with favourites like Ariel, Pocket Power, Wolf Power, Model Man, Empress Club, London News and Horse Chestnut all contending for the top spot.

Last year, Whisky Baron claimed The Sun Met celebrated with Mumm title, as well as a whopping R5 million. Ridden by Greg Cheyne, it was the Australian-bred horse’s fifth victory with Cheyne on board. Legal Eagle was the popular favourite, with odds of 15-10 (22-10) coming in at second place, followed by Marinaresco at fifth place, with odds of 33-10 and Whisky Baron claiming the title with odds of 75-10 in terms of race favourites.

3. Who will attend?

Each year, the Sun Met welcomes a star-studded host of local celebrities, models and entertainment moguls. Rub shoulders with the who’s who and socialise with some of the industry’s finest at this grand affair. As custom dictates, make sure you and your date are wearing your finest threads in case of any impromptu photo ops with any celebs.

4. The after party is the real party

As previously mentioned, there will be some big names in attendance, but more than that, there will be some awesome live acts, too.  Featuring headlining acts like DJ Kent, DJ Zinhle, Euphonik, Mi Casa and Vin Diesel, you’ll want to stay the entire way through to end your day on a perfect note.
