The Different Types of Wedding Dresses

After saying the “I do’s” and the wave of excitement dissipates, a keen sense of panic sets in for every bride-to-be – what to wear. Tradition dictates that the garment be white, flowy and poufy, but its 2018 and we’ve seen the likes of Solange Knowles in an off-white power jumpsuit, Chrissy Teigen in a crimson gown and Poppy Delevigne in bohemian florals so now there’s no going back to the basics.

With many variations of cuts, styles, lace and whites to choose from, we know that the choice is not an easy one to make. But, like finding the perfect partner in life, you are destined to find the one – it’s only a matter of narrowing down the search (Still talking about wedding dresses btw).

So without much ado, let’s discuss your options:

Strapless

Strapless gowns are universally flattering and therefore, they’re also the go-to neckline for traditional brides. Presented in sweetheart, bustier or straight-cut, this neckline is the top pick among summer/spring brides.

Colourful

Non-conventional brides continue to push the boundaries on what is ‘acceptable’ and stray from the norm that is bridal white. Choose a floral frock or opt for something vibrant to commemorate your special day ─ Trust us, your mother-in-law will get over the initial shock.

Lace

Like two peas in a pod, lace and weddings go together. A lace wedding dress may seem a tad overdone in the traditional sense, but there’s a reason that brides choose this timeless thread over and over again. For one, they are practical and lightweight enough to withstand the summer heat and secondly, they are demure, modest and signify purity (don’t quote us on this).

Skirts & Silhouettes

This part is very important and surprisingly, it is the part that is mostly overlooked. When it comes to choosing the skirt, it is imperative to know your body shape. The last thing you want is to resemble your wedding cake, so we suggest that you choose wisely.

For extra curves and definition, we suggest a mermaid wedding dress. This silhouette contours the body from the chest to the knee and then flares out at the hem ─ Dramatic, sexy and very flattering, this cut is a modern bride’s go-to.

If you’re looking for the Disney fairy tale special with lots of volume, then we suggest that you opt for a tulle skirt or something tiered. Picturesque, traditional and oh-so stunning, you can’t go wrong with this one.

Style tip: line the skirt just below the bust or on your waistline for that authentic princess fit.
