Winter Wardrobe Winners – Your Top 5 Wardrobe Updates For This Season

Before you start adding any new winter items to your wardrobe first ask yourself one vitally important question, what’s in there right now?

If your immediate answer is that you have no clue, maybe your wardrobe is due for an edit.

Your first step is to cull anything from your cupboards that you haven’t worn in (and lets be generous here) a year. Wedding dresses are excluded from the cull, bridesmaids dresses are not. Don’t kid yourself; you’re not going to wear it again.

Now that you’re made some room in your cupboards, take stock of what’s in there. Really have a look at what are left and what it is that you wear most often. This will give you an idea of what your personal style actually is and what new items could complement your style and the clothes you already own and wear most often.

Now that you’re freed up some space and know which items would complement your wardrobe best, let’s look at some winter trend updates.

1.    Dark Florals

Checks and plaids were undoubtedly the essential prints for autumn and while they won’t be going anywhere this winter, dark floral prints are emerging as key for the season. These dark blooms have a moodier, almost gothic romance, feel to them and this lends them well to being paired with faux furs, leather (faux or not) or velvets.

For a more casual or daytime look team a floral top or dress with a faux fur jacket or gilet, or maybe a biker jacket and biker boots or thick soled brogues. For a dressier or night-time look a velvet jacket and a pair of embellished heels or boots will do the trick.

2.    Stiletto Boots

For a fair many, boots are their favourite thing about winter fashion. This winter boot aficionados are spoilt for choice when it comes to boot shapes and lengths. Popular boot lengths for the season range all the way from ankle to over the knee and while you can find all these lengths in a variety of heel options (block and shaped heels being popular), the stiletto heel still remains the perennial favourite.

The sock boot is a great seasonal update to the usually more structured nature of the stiletto boot.

3.    Knitted Sweater Dress

The knitted sweater dress is a winter styling dream come true. They provide the effortless elegance of a dress with the practical warmth of a knitted sweater. Who says you have to sacrifice practicality for fashionabilty?!

4.    Riding Boots

Riding boots are a fashion trend classic and a chic option if you’re looking for an everyday casual boot. Here’s a quick styling tip if you’re wearing your riding boots, or any other knee over above-the-knee boot, with jeans: make sure your jeans are fitted enough to easily be tucked into the boots because you definitely don’t want them bunching at the top of the boots.

5.    Tan or Camel Coats and Jackets

A camel or tan coat or jacket is possibly one of the most versatile pieces of clothing you can own. A good coat example could keep you toasty while running your daily errands, can elevate a jeans and sweater combo to new chic heights and won’t look out of place if thrown over a dress when heading out for the evening. Every cupboard should also absolutely have a jacket in one of these neutral tones in it.

6.    Bonus Extra – The Neutral Bag

A neutral colour bag is both a seasonal update and a year ‘round must-have. Team essential colours like black, grey, tans or browns with classic shapes like the tote or satchel and you’ll have a winning combination.
