How to keep your home warm this winter

You shouldn’t have to pile on layer upon layer when you’re home, because your home shouldn’t feel like frozen tundra, so we’ve lined up some of the best ways you can decorate your place to warm it up a little.

Often times the main culprit of a cold home is a lack of good insulation. Bricks have relatively efficient heat conducting properties, which works well in theory, but in practice means they tend to level out to the temperature of the air around them. In a nutshell, they get as cold as the air outside.

An easy way to eliminate this problem is to insulate either an entire room or create ‘hotspots’ in certain areas of a room. A good start is to decorate big empty walls by hanging up anything from mirrors to art, which is readily available at Zando under our home decor. Another great insulating alternative is a bookshelf. Not only will either method help to lock warmth into a room, but each will help to perk up a space and add to its aesthetic.

On the more practical side, take advantage of winter’s rare sunny days by opening your curtains or blinds and let your home soak up all that solar warmth. A steady stream of sunlight all day long should be sufficient to warm your home. However, be sure to draw your curtains or blinds shut the moment the light starts to dim so that you don’t lose any of that toasty warmth.

Another unexpected source of heat loss comes via the floor. All that requires, though, is a rug in every room. It’s as simple as that. And in addition to their insulating prowess, rugs literally do anchor the look of a room and provide a finishing touch where an element or two might be missing. For this season turn your focus to jewel tones, especially navy blue and emerald, as well as textured rugs in any of the season’s hottest fabrics, like faux fur, velvets and knits.

To seal the deal – and the heat into your home – make use of richly textured fabrics in throws, scatter cushions, other decor essentials, and even artwork to maximise how warm your place not only feels, but looks, too. For this season that means velvets, knits, chenille, faux furs and fur pile pieces, which, when combined, will be able to best a heater’s thermal output. And if all else fails, crank up that heater. We hope the above has given you a few ideas on how to warm your home this winter.
