What is a shacket?

Fashion is constantly developing and evolving – we constantly see updated forms, and the shacket is the latest addition to the innovations of the industry. Merging two staple pieces – the shirt and jacket – shackets are essential to any autumn/winter wardrobe, where layering is a necessity.

Versatility is gaining traction as a prerequisite for curating a wardrobe; with so many of us working from home, we need our clothing to reflect both comfort and style – and the effortless silhouette of the shacket is a fabulous solution to both these components, as it can be dressed up or down depending on the scenario. The perfect shacket is somewhat of a love child; originating as a “workwear” jacket seen in France in the 20th century; where functionality was tempered by a boxy cut, and dyed using indigo as it was the cheapest form of colour available.

This style was popular among labourers and artists of the era, where a shirt needed to be both utilitarian and practical; and responded to the climate as it was generally made with a thicker canvas fabric. The thickness of the fabric contributed to the resemblance of the shirt taking the shape of a jacket, and the addition of pockets improved its functionality for everyday wear. With the historic connotations of the shacket, we know that it is a style that has been tried and tested by many people before us – take it from us, the shacket is vital for completing any look!

The adaptive nature of trends defines fashion; as our cultural and social circumstances change with the times, so do our clothing needs – and the shacket is the ultimate hybrid in response to this, with so many styles now available from denim to checks and onto prints – the standard pattern remains, but the variations are endless. The shacket is cosy enough to layer under coats and cool enough to wear when you need an over piece for warmer seasons, and this functionality means we can move easily through our day without having to consider or carry too many garments along with us.

A well-made shacket should feel comfortable around the hips and waist, breathe beautifully and fit firmly underneath any bigger jackets or coats – a collar is essential too, as it defines the “shirt” part of the piece. It is the perfect smart-casual garment and is flattering to any shape and size, making the shacket a wardrobe style for any season.
