What to Wear – A General Guide

Whether you’re having one of those “what to wear” or “I have nothing to wear” days while you stare at piles and piles of clothing or you’re simply lacking that creative flair to put together a bomb outfit, these tips will help you craft casual and dressy looks alike with key pieces that you probably already own.

When it comes to picking out general pieces to build your ensemble with, whether you’re a man or woman, you need to take into consideration factors such as your body shape, colours that complement your skin tone and your personal style – these, I find, are the top three facets among many that will help you achieve a killer look which will eliminate those days when you not sure how to get dresses. Although there are so many contributing elements to putting together winning getups, we can all agree that jeans and a white tee is a match made in heaven.

Wardrobe Essentials

Having these key clothing pieces in your wardrobe will ensure that you always have a stylish outfit to wear whenever you’re in a pinch. Play with clothing accessories, shoes and colours to switch up the fashion look in between.

Crisp White Tee (T-shirt)

Its always good to have a crisp white t-shirt in your cupboard. Whether you’re wearing it under a shirt for an interview or teaming it with blue jeans for a classic, casual look, a white tee is an absolute necessity.

Mix it up: While you’re at it, throw in a grey and black tee along with a vibrant colour that looks great on you.

Little Black Dress (Women)/ Little Black Blazer (Men)

When you finish work at 5pm and have a date at 5:30pm, having a little black dress (LBD) or a little black blazer (LBB) can truly change your fashion game. These endlessly versatile garments are basically like uniforms of fashion, you can wear it as often as you’d like and no one will call you out for it.

Mix it up: LBD: Dress it down with a casual cardigan or denim jacket and sandals or jazz it up with strappy heels and dainty jewellery for a night out.

LBB: Team yours with skinny jeans and a crew-neck tee for a more casual approach or smarten up your look with a crisp, white button-down, tan chinos and your best pair of wingtips.

Dark Wash Denims

Similar to the LBD and LBB, dark wash denims jeans are also extremely versatile and can be teamed with anything from a casual tee to a glitzy blouse or perfectly ironed shirt.

Mix it up: First know your body shape, then pick your silhouette and get another pair in black and light wash.

Black Stilettos/Tan Brogues

You’ll find that a constant trend in all of these closet essentials of what to wear is that they’re versatile. The black stilettos are closet chameleons as they can be teamed with your jeans and tee ensemble as well as your LBD. The tan brogues are perfect for dressing looks up or down as the tan hue can work with casual black jeans and blue slacks.

Mix it up: Get yourself a vibrant red pair of stilettos along with a black pair. For the brogues, grab a dark brown pair, too, when getting the tan ones.

Perfectly Tailored Shirts

Be sure to get these in various fabrics so you have one for casual and smart-dressing and get quite a few, too.

Mix it up: Ladies, you can jazz up your shirts with statement necklaces underneath the collar, while guys can simply show off those lovely forearms by neatly rolling the sleeves up to just below the elbow.

Knee Length Skirt/Tailored Pants

Knee-length skirts and well-tailored pants aren’t just for professional wear. Team these pieces with laid back styles such as chunky knits to turn it into an uber-stylish, casual look.

Mix it up: For ladies, get the skirts in various fabrics such as denim, lace and leather to add some texture to your look. For the guys, make sure your pants aren’t too fitted or loose and if you’re struggling to find a well-fitting pair, grab some pants that fit okay and take it to a trusted tailor to make it fit exactly the way you like.

Leather Jacket

It’s for the cool kids, ‘nuff said.

Mix it up: Pair a leather jacket with any look and watch the transformation from “eh” to “ayyyyyyye!”

Cosy Knits

Cosy knits are great for chill days and weekend outings alike. You can put together an athleisure ensemble by teaming it with joggers and sneakers or swap the joggers for jeans and finish the look with boots.

Mix it up: The key to making these knits work is to get ones with minimal patterns and colour so think cable and continental knit in white, cream and black.

Although you can craft plenty of stylish outfit looks with these items, use this list as a what to wear guide to build a wardrobe and then add one-of-a-kind pieces that will take your looks up a notch.
