Men, here’s what to wear to a wedding

Let’s face it, most men only own one suit that they’ll wear to every wedding or formal occasion and (frankly speaking) that’s something that we should leave in the past ─ It’s clear that many guys are clueless about men’s fashion and what to wear to weddings, so we’re here to help you out in that department.

Firstly, note that there isn’t one set outfit when it comes to dressing for a wedding. The four seasons can have a big effect on your wardrobe and it’s definitely something you should consider when choosing your outfit. You should choose something that you feel comfortable in and what works with the weather, of course. Believe it or not, but something as simple as a different coloured suit or a few accessories can change the whole aesthetic of your look.

Winter/Autumn Wedding

Autumn is an odd season because you’ll get warm, sunny days right after icy cold ones in a single week. So, what do you think you’re wearing to a wedding in such unpredictable weather? Tweed is ideal for autumn as it’s a practical and warm, yet breathable material. The texture complements the rich outdoor surroundings and it comes in a variety of colours, allowing you to opt for a bright or more toned down finish.

During winter, layering will be your best friend, even with suits. Adding a waistcoat to your look won’t just provide extra warmth, it will also have you looking sleek and wedding-appropriate. A double-breasted trench coat is another good layering option for winter You can choose from different materials, but it’s recommended to go for heavy wools on colder days. Opt for darker colours like navy or black with a crisp white shirt and matching dress shoes.

A summer wedding

Summer is the perfect opportunity to bring out some colour and play around with your style. To make sure your summer wedding looks are on point, you’ll need to find the right balance between cool and smart. We all know that the heat during a South-African summer can be something else, so it’s recommended to wear a lightweight blazer and slim-fitting cotton chinos in a cool tone. That way you won’t just look sharp but you’ll also avoid sweating up a storm. Your best would be to opt for cotton or linen chinos, dress shoes, a long sleeve shirt and suspenders.

A beach wedding

Attending a beach wedding allows you to go a little more casual when it comes to your styling your look. Beige is a classic suit colour and really adds to the casual vibe of a beach wedding. Pastel colours are also an option. A blazer with chino shorts or cropped pants, completed by a pair of loafers is also a great idea for those hotter days.

What about the traditional black and white suit?

It’s a yes from us. Black is the standard colour to go for when it comes to dressing for weddings. It’s always best to play it safe and black is the right colour to do it with. We will, however, caution you against a head-to-toe black look. Instead, brighten up your outfit with something as simple as a white (or other colour) shirts.

Deciding what to wear to a wedding can be quite stressful, but taking note of the season might make things a little bit easier.
