Winter Styling with Boots

While there are many great advantages to living in one of the warmer regions of the world, one of its fashion disadvantages is the very limited period in which we can comfortably wear boots. But wait no longer for boots seasons is finally and gloriously upon us! To make the most of our limited boots season a take-no-prisoners approach to styling them should be adopted to give them maximum fashion exposure.

Let’s look at some of the hottest styling trends for the season’s must-have boots.

Over-the-Knee (OTK) Boots

If you’ve been paying attention to the season’s trends – and if you’re reading this you more than likely have been – you’ll notice that there are some key winter pieces that are usually more closely associated to summer; think culottes, lightweight printed dress and pleated skirts. Fear not, there is method to their fashion madness: this winter is all about layering.

So when wearing a lightweight dress, midi-length skirt or a pair of culottes, pair them with a lush-textured or padded jacket to keep your upper half warm and a pair of long or over-the-knee boots to keep your legs toasty. Ensuring that the hem of your garment extends over the top of your thigh-high boots is a great styling trick. By having one solid colour extending from your hem to the floor gives the illusion of longer legs.

Western Boots

Western boots are having a moment, but when styling these boots please think more Soho boho than Texas chic – think dark floral maxi dresses paired with a biker jacket or scarf printed mini dresses teamed with gold accented accessories.

Hiking and Utilitarian Boots

Hiking and utilitarian-inspired boots – and ‘inspired’ being the key word here because these boots are not meant for any sort of a trail – bring a harder edge and sense of practicality to the season’s styling. These boots are perfectly paired with winter’s technical-inspired outerwear like the puffer jacket or parka coat and toughen up some of the season’s prettier prints.

Faux Skins

Animal prints and patterns are an absolute must-have this winter and while leopard prints have been making their presence felt in clothing, snake and mock-croc patterns are the go-to attention grabbers for shoes and boots. The season’s styling also dictates that mixing patterns and prints when layering a look is essential, but if you’re worried that it might end up looking messy try keeping all your prints and patterns to one tone or colourway – this will ensure a cohesive look while still adding a touch of eccentricity.

Wellington Boots

Rubber boots, gumboots, wellies, whatever you want to call them, they’re hands down the most practical way to keep your feet warm and dry while trudging through the wintery outdoors. Not just for farm life or festival fields, team these boots with a prairie-inspired over-the-top feminine dress for the perfect juxtaposition of tough-chic.

White

White boots are the season’s statement boot; they are an exclamation point to just about any look you put together. If you’re worried about how harsh a pair of black boots might look when paired with winter’s grey tones, try a pair of white ones for a fresher approach.

A pair of white boots is also a great extender for boots season because they’ll look just as fresh when spring blooms.
