Fashion Trends Women | Summer | Spring | South Africa

Shake off the winter chills for a dose of something fresh this upcoming summer. Although the official women’s wear SS18 season has just begun, we couldn’t contain our anticipation and decided to do a dive of what to expect and what to give the boot come September.

“what to give the boot come September”

Maximalism, Mules & Jewels

Challenging the proverb, “Less is more”, maximalism proposes that, in fact, a little more couldn’t possibly hurt. By adding more detail, more colour and more texture you can achieve this look effortlessly. Making good on its ‘extra’ appeal, this trend incorporates varying visual and tactile textures, invoking sensory overload. Maximalism celebrates beauty in excess, so have fun with prints, pleats and even plissé fabrics to pull it off, and keep an eye out for a ruffle revival. Statement sleeves, sheer delights, elegant cutouts and boxy shapes will also see their way into this summer trend so be sure to go big or go home.

The Mule movement got afoot last season and will potentially find itself being carried over to SS18. These backless beauties are the most coveted shoe of the season thanks to their convenient slip-on build and chic appeal. They are available in several styles and heights including the iconic stiletto pointies worn by your childhood favourite – Barbie herself – or chunky block heeled sandals which are both convenient and stylish.

All that glitters is gold, right? Well, borrowing from that concept, primary colours have made their way back into fashion trends. Sultry reds, exotic greens, brilliant yellows and bright blues are all the rage this upcoming season so be sure to incorporate aspects thereof into your looks. Style tip: lush fabrics like silk, satin and velvet bring these hues to life.

Boo for Bohemian

Though it has enjoyed a long tenure on the fashion mill, we suspect that the Boho trend is sure to see itself out come this SS18. Apart from the festival goers and Vanessa Hudgens stans, Bohemian is a fashion trend that has lost some of its popularity due to the rebirth of sartorial fashion. Structured, clean lines and minimalism have thus become more sought-after and have been making the rounds at all major retailers and large fashion houses in lieu of the signature loose fabrics and details that bohemian fashion is known for. You can however still hold on to those fringe accessories and clogs as they might still come in handy come summer.

Goodbye Island Style

Last SS17 we celebrated Island style with a plethora of palm tree prints and banana leaves on loose, airy garments for an easy-going resort look courtesy of Dolce & Gabanna. This season, we bid adieu to those very prints and welcome back staple stripes as the go-to SS18 print to cop according to Elle

Whichever fashion trends find themselves on the runway or the rails this SS18, stay tuned for our official report on the latest and greatest of them all.
