Women in Power: Rowlene

Singer and songwriter, Rowlene hails from Elsies River, Cape Town. Her very first single, Imposter was released at the beginning of 2016 as an exclusive debut track on GoodHope FM. Since then, she is the only (female) artist signed to Nasty C’s label, Tall Racks. She brings a softer, sexier and more sultry sound to the rap dominated label as proven on the smash hit single SMA. Rowlene is currently working on her debut album titled EL3VEN11.

When have you been most satisfied in your life? Professionally and personally.

There’s really no better time than right now. I live in the moment and try to embrace everything one moment, one day at a time. I’m pretty content right now holistically.

Describe your off-duty style.

When I’m in the studio at home recording, it has to be a comfy onesie with my slippers. When I’m on-the-go, you’ll find me in jeans, a tee and sneakers.

How does fashion influence your career & daily life?

It allows me to be unapologetically myself. It kinda allows me to express myself without saying a word at all.

What is the one item of clothing that you can’t live without?

Socks

Tell us what the highlight of your career is.

The highlight of my career has to be SMA.

What, would you say, is the biggest challenge that women face in the music industry?

Constantly being compared to other women in the industry and being pitted against one another.

Who is your role model, and why did they inspire you?

My role model has to be my dad. He has overcome some really big obstacles and still remains gentle and kind. He’s the coolest person I know.

What advice would you give women looking to start working in your field?

Invest in yourself. You’re 100% responsible for your dreams, your goals and your aspirations. Don’t have a heart made of glass and a mind of stone. You’re a student of this life thing and sometimes failing is the lesson you needed to learn.

When do you feel most inspired / in love with yourself?

I’m an artist, even on the days when I don’t want to be me, I find a way to turn that into something I would write about, sometimes even sing about and I think that’s what I love most about myself. It inspires me to be a better person, artist and singer each day!

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

You are what you think. A man that wins is a man that thinks he can.

What advice would give to your younger self?

You’re doing great! Keep climbing through the windows of the doors that were once shut.

What’s next for you?

I am currently working on my debut album titled EL3VEN11. I’m super excited about my sonic growth and I simply can’t wait for the entire world to hear it. The first single is scheduled to drop in the third week of August, supported by some visuals later in the term.

How will you celebrate Women’s Day?

I will be celebrating Women’s Day at Shekinah’s RoseFest as well as Miss South Africa where I’ll be performing at both of these amazing events.
