We asked beauty content creator and self-taught make-up artist, Nuzhah Jacobs to give us 7 new beauty, skincare and hair trends to try for 2021.
We all start the new year with the same phrase, “new year, new me”. If we are being honest with ourselves, most of our New Year’s resolutions don’t end up lasting past the first week of January. This is why I’ve decided to set a realistic goal for both you and me, which can be achieved in just one week. Here’s the challenge: try something new with your make-up, haircare and skincare each day for seven days straight.
Day 1: New Year, New Lips
A new lip colour can instantly make you feel like you are ready to tackle your day, so why not try a new bold lip? For those of you who would like a lipstick that will not transfer onto your mask, a matte lip would work best as it dries down. If you are prone to having dry or chapped lips, then a cream lipstick or lip oil would be a better option for you. If making your lips appear plump is what you’d prefer from a lip product, opt for a gloss instead.

Day 2: New Year, New Eyes
Since cloth face masks are now considered the norm, your eyes are most likely the first feature people see when you meet them, so let’s make them pop. You can achieve this by including bold, dramatic eyeshadow and fun, colourful liners.
The Stila Shimmer Glow Liquid Eyeshadow Vivid Amethyst is a liquid eyeshadow that is super easy to use. You can apply the product on the lid and press it on using your finger or a flat brush. It has a purple pigment with a glitter finish, perfect for a glam look.
The Zar Cosmetics Colour Gypsy Queen Eyeshadow Palette is another option for a bold eye as it has a variety of shades to choose from in both matte and shimmer finishes.
For your fun colourful liners, you can create a sharp wing or smudge out the liner around your eye using the Essence Long Lasting Eye Pencils in Life in Pink and Go Green, or Revlon’s Colorstay Creme Gel Pencil in Private Island.

Day 3: New Year, New Lashes
Longer lashes define and add life to your eyes. If you are still afraid of wearing strip lashes, this is your sign to try it out. False lashes have proven to elevate almost any make-up look so why not try pairing your mascara with a full set of strip lashes or bundled individual lashes for a more natural lash effect.

Day 4: New Year, New Brows
This year we’re embracing the natural subtle brow instead of the painted on ‘Instagram brow’ that so many of us loved not too long ago. Some products which can help you achieve a more natural, cleaner and fluffier brow are:
- The Baos Empire Eyebrow Razor, which I would use to sculpt the shape of the brow and trim any unwanted hairs.
- The Revlon Colorstay Brow Creator is one of my favourite brow products. The fine crayon allows you to create your hair-like strokes. It also has a powder applicator and brush, which can be used to blend any harsh lines for a more natural finish.
- The Catrice Brow Idol Sport Proof Mascara. This brow product has a gel consistency with a brush applicator which brushes and coats the brow hairs, leaving a very natural finish.
Day 5: New Year, New Skin
We are all about healthy, glowy skin this year, so put away your extra full coverage foundations and embrace your natural glow. The Flourish Skincare Day Cream is amazing because it has an SPF of 50 and caters to every skin type. Vitamin C is always a winner for your skin and the Dr Rashel Vitamin C Facial Serum is a fave of mine. After applying these two products, I would then advise finishing off the skin with either a lightweight foundation/BB cream or by spot concealing with a liquid concealer.

Day 6: New Year, New Hair
There are so many exciting hair trends on the horizon for 2021, two of which are curtain bangs and experimental colour.
Celebrities including Ariana Grande and Gigi Hadid have recently been spotted rocking the curtain bang trend. This trend is amazing because it is relatively low-maintenance and flattering on pretty much everyone. You can either commit to it by chopping your hair or you can purchase a BLKT Clip-in Fringe Extension and have the cut without the commitment.
When it comes to experimental colour, bold colours like pink, red and blue look particularly striking peeking out around the natural hair colour. You can commit to the trend by bleaching and box dyeing your hair using the Garnier Nutrisse Color Vibrant Dye, or you can use less permanent options like the SKA Semi-Permanent Hair Color Powder in pink, purple or blue.

Day 7: New Year, New Nails
Funky prints and nail accents are big this year, so try a super popular nail trend which takes inspo from the ’00s, the cow print. This nail art is simple to DIY at home. All you need is some white polish, black polish, a base coat and a top coat and you’re ready to go.
