Eid Ul Adha 2017 | South Africa

Eid Ul Adha is one of the holy celebrations on the muslim calendar. This year 2017 it’s taking place on the 1st of September and will continue until Tuesday the 5th September in South Africa. The phrase Eid al-Adha translates as the “festival of the sacrifice” and is also known as the Greater Eid.

It’s a holy time of sacrifice and is celebrated between, friends, family and people in their community. It is a time for sharing. Eid al-Adha is different from Eid al-Fitr – which is the festival after Ramadan.

Muslims honour the Eid al-Adha as the time Ibrahim – known as Abraham to Jews and Christians – was going to sacrifice his son Isaac but was ordered by God to kill an animal instead. Here in our local South African communities this is also known as “korebaan”, the slaughtering of sheep. This is done in some people back yards and others tend to go to sheep farms to do it.

Eid Ul Adha celebrations starts off with Morning Prayer, this is followed by a lot of food and then sharing of gifts or giving of money between friends and family. As mentioned before this is a time for sharing, therefore food and money is shared with the poor as well. Muslim’s see this as a perfect time to give back.

Eid Ul Adha brings not only celebration of prayer and food but Muslim people are also well known for their hijab fashion. Hijab is a traditional way of dressing in the Muslim culture, lately hijab has translated into high fashion, brands such as Dolce & Gabbana have released full hijab collections and it’s taken the world by storm.

If you’re looking for something to wear this Eid Ul Adha, choose from our selection of long dresses, beautiful covered top and wide range for shoes and accessories. Most women opt for a long dresses and a pair of heels for Eid, why not try a pants this time around.

Try something new this year and go for a bold colour, either with a cool top or with your bag Pair a black pant, with a long sleeve top that covers all the necessary areas. Add some cool accessories and they perfect sure and scarf and you’re good to go.

A blessed Eid Ul Adha to all celebrating!

FYI – don’t be surprised when people start speaking about Eid again mid-year next year. There are actually two Eids each year – one at the end of the annual pilgrimage to Mecca that we’ve just discussed, and the other (Eid-ul-Fitr) at the end of Ramadaan.
