Rest before you drive

Traffic officials are always stressing how important it is to be well rested when you’re behind the wheel that’s going in for the long haul. Driving when you’re fatigued is just as bad as driving under the influence and although it isn’t a crime punishable by law, driving under compromising circumstances, like being sleepy, will have much worse repercussions than a DUI.

Fuel up

Not only your car, but yourself as well. Make sure you’re well-stocked for your trip with vitamins, healthy food and most importantly, water. Healthier food options won’t have you feeling sluggish after half an hour and ensuring you’re properly hydrated will increase you alertness which is essential for the long haul.

Plan your stops

A trip from Cape Town to Jozi is usually about 16 hours long and no matter how lazy you are, no one is going to enjoy sitting for that long so take a break every two hours or so to stretch your legs and get your blood flowing properly again. Keep these breaks to about half an hour or maybe longer if you’re making a lunch or dinner stop.

Sit upright

If you just lie in bed for the sake of it, you usually start feeling sleepy and might just take a nap so why would you lie back in your driving seat? Sitting upright will help you feel awake and in turn increase your alertness, too.
