7 Tips for Healthier Hair

Knowing your hair is key to having healthier hair. Without knowing what it needs you can never take the measures necessary to ensure it becomes healthier over time. That said, it isn’t an exact science, and what may work for one may not work for another. Be that as it may, squizz the tips below to get the lowdown on how to preen your locks.

1. Protect Your Hair

Try to protect your hair from heat, strain and weather. Excessive sun exposure, heat and overall weather exposure can dry out your hair, cause dirt build up and damage it. To prevent these things from happening try covering your hair with a hat, scarf or umbrella when outdoors.

2. Care for your wet hair

Hair is most fragile when wet, so you have to take extra care to deal with it gently.  Lightly towel-dry your hair and don’t start styling it when it’s still soaked or straight after washing it. When combing through your wet hair start combing from the bottom and work your way to the top.

3. Low Heat

Blow drying, straightening and curling of hair is one of the biggest reasons for hair damage. We tug, flip and curl our hair on a daily basis and add products to already styled hair. Avoid using heat on your hair and if you absolutely have to, make sure to put all your hairstyling tools on a low or medium heat.

4. Shampoo and conditioner

When choosing a shampoo and conditioner you need to know what kind of hair you have. It’s not wise to close your eyes and point or pick anything in a pretty bottle. Don’t, for instance, use shampoo meant for oily hair if you have dry hair.

5. Masks and proper conditioning

A huge part of taking care of your hair is moisturising it properly and making sure that moisture stays locked in. Using a mask once a week helps with this, opt for a deep conditioning mask so that it gets deep into the roots. Another thing to note is that conditioners are formulated to seal in the moisture content in the hair shaft. They are not meant for the scalp. Start conditioning about 5 centimetres away from your scalp.

6. Healthy hair loves cold water

While warm water opens up your hair cuticles and cleans the hair, cold water seals the cuticles after conditioning the hair. This then locks and seals in moisture, making your hair look shiny and healthy. This doesn’t mean you have you rinse your hair with ice cold water but take a warm shower and then give your scalp a shot of cool water or room temperature water after you’ve conditioned it.

7. Clarifying Shampoo

Using a clarifying shampoo once a month is a super idea; it prevents product build up which happens due to your shampoo and conditioner losing its effectiveness.
