Last night, South African Fashion Week 2018 opened its doors to 69 collections showing at its new home at Sandton City rooftop, a spectacular venue surrounded by a skyline of modern architecture.
As always, the schedule put the spotlight on the diversity and innovation of the South African fashion designers all residing and manufacturing in our country.
South African fashion designers featured killed it last night. Let’s take a closer look at each fashion designer and their collection!
Rich Mnisi
Rich Mnisi, LISOF graduate and Africa Fashion International Young Designer of the year, founded the label of the same name in 2014. The brand is young at heart and explores the treasures engraved within Africa and the world of modern culture and heritage. With a global view catering for an aspirational market, design and craftsmanship are the foremost motives. Packaged in extremist, yet minimalist structures, the collection was one to behold.
Thebe Magugu
A contemporary South African fashion brand, primarily operating within the field of womens ready to wear, Thebe Magugu has a firm footing in accessories and small multidisciplinary projects.
Wanda Lephoto
Wanda Lephoto is one quarter of Johannesburg-bred creative collective, The Sartists, alongside Andile Buka, Kabelo Kungwane and Xzavier Zulu, whose visual output and collaborations aim to “challenge parochial ideas about blackness in modern society”. Lephoto launches his menswear line, in 0261, as a means to “educate through style”, by drawing on contemporary subcultures and traditional symbolism as well as heritage sportswear and work wear staples. “In a time where the world looks at Africa for inspiration, it is interesting to observe what and where we as Africans do and go. Often having to re-appropriate our own culture against the commercial viability the West has over us, we seldom look past aestheticism to unwrap the nature of who we are”.
