Spruce Up Your Home Without Breaking The Bank

Alright, alright, it’s time to pack away your fairy lights and put your Christmas tree back into storage until the silly season hits again. And if your space, that was once filled with Christmas cheer, looks a little, well, dull then now is the perfect time to start redecorating and adding some 2018 trends to your humble abode.

First things first

Clear the clutter

A good new year’s resolution is to kick the bad habit of hoarding, wouldn’t you agree? Get a big rubbish bag and start going through the items that you’ve had since Hit me baby one more time was number one and start chucking away. If some of your items are still in good condition then put those in another bag, label it and give it away to charity because ‘tis the season of giving (rather late than never, we say).

Scrub-a-dub-dub

Now that you’ve cleared the clutter, it’s time to get your rubber gloves on and start cleaning. Yeah, we’re talking about a good old fashioned sweep and mop. Need a place to begin? Well, how about your dusty coffee table? Then, get a whitening pen to bring the grout between your tiles back to life and of course you can either scrape off bathroom mould or re-paint because who doesn’t love a good DIY paint session? Also, don’t neglect your windows! You need the light to make your space look cosy and full of life so make sure to give ‘em a good wipe down.

Re-arrange your furniture

Did you know that the quickest (and cheapest) way of transforming a room is to rearrange your furniture? Keep in mind that sometimes this hack isn’t always possible and you don’t want to spend the day moving your furniture into places that make no sense and have no flow – and flow is non-negotiable. But, if you can move an ottoman around and re-arrange the position that your current chaise is in, then by all means get to it.

Now for the fun part ladies – let’s shop!

Pop of colour

In case you missed it, Pantone has named Ultra Violet as the colour of the year and we’re slightly obsessed – okay, completely! Think pale purple bedding, a dazzling violet scatter cushion in your living room or even some faux lavender plants here and there, sounds whimsically divine right? But don’t overdo it because too many purple items will make your space look cluttered, smaller and like a hot purple mess – yikes! Add a piece sparingly for a pop of colour and to show off that you are starting the year very much on-trend.

Summer scents

From notes of vanilla to mandarin spices or even fresh tropical scents, you should definitely add diffusers and candles to your home. Not only will your home constantly smell like a warm summer’s day but these items will also add a trendy décor element. Talk about killing two birds with one stone and saving some cash – ka ching baby!

Brighter bedding

Fold up your fleece blankets and pack away your dark winter linen because, honey, summer is here. Opt for lighter sheets and pastel colours to bring a newfound sense of summer into your bedroom. From pale blues and pinks to floral prints and stark white sheets, you will make your room lighter, brighter and ready for summer.

Floral fun

If there is anything that screams summer, it would be florals. From soft cushions and luxurious bedding to framed art, you’ll love how inviting this print is. Add a scatter cushion here and there to your living room and master bedroom for a fresh burst of summer lovin’.

Green goddess

You’ll definitely want to add some green plants to your home, even if they’re of the artificial variety. The dark green colour evokes an element of freshness and renewal, so when added to a minimal or eclectic space, it bolsters the promise of the summer season.

Now that 2018 is well underway there’s no time like the present to redecorate your space. Think DIY projects, shopping for on-trend items or simply refurbishing the items you already have. Either way, these simple hacks will help to give your interior a new lease on life without costing too much. So what are you waiting for? Get to it!
