How to Choose a Sports Bra

Finding the right sports bra can be quite a demoralising pursuit for many and it often results in giving up hope or making the wrong decision (We know that story too well). Did you know that only 15 to 20% of women are wearing the correct bra for their shape? The rest – like us – are aimlessly choosing whatever looks good and completely negating the feel-good aspect of lingerie shopping.

Sports bras – much like partners – are there for the long haul and thus, need to be chosen with special care. So how do you find the one? Contrary to popular belief, choosing the right sports bra is about more than just picking the right cup size. There are many factors that you need to take into account and we will be unpacking each in the following passages. Stay tuned for more tips on how to find your breast fit.

Compression vs Encapsulation

So what’s the difference between the two? Well, compression bras usually come in the shelf shape and work for smaller cups best. If you’re a yoga lover or into low/moderate-impact workouts (like strength training), then the compression bra is ideal for you. These don’t feature cups built into their design and are usually worn by hauling them over your head. Their main function is to compress and secure the girls to keep movement limited.

Encapsulation bras feature cups that frame the breasts and provide shape. They also comprise of fasteners on the front or back for a secure fit and are designed for the lady who has a little more boob to work with. As you probably guessed by now, these are the ones to go for if you’re into high-impact training and offers maximum support throughout.

Let’s Talk Straps & Cups

Fight the sag by trying on a sports bra as you would any other training gear – do a little jiggle, a squat and a hop or two. Ideally, you shouldn’t feel bounce or pressure against your chest wall. If you do, then it’s not the one. Ogle the girls for a bit and consider the fit of the cups and/or the underband, if the encapsulation sits flat against your chest then you’re good. Check this by reaching your arms overhead to make sure that they don’t lift. You don’t want any bounties spilling over, so make sure that your girls are firmly anchored and that your breasts are fully covered. Do a stretch test by pulling the underband with two fingers: if they stretch for less than an inch then they’re a keeper!

You’ll want to invest in wider adjustable straps for better weight distribution and comfort when it comes to strenuous workouts as thin straps tend to dig into your shoulders and offer little-to-no support. Racerback designs anchor the bra closer to the body and typically provide more support that way.

Other key features to look for

You know the saying: “more hands make lighter work”? Well, in bra lingo (yes, we speak it now), extra support makes all the difference. Reinforced inner padding, mesh panels for better ventilation, sweat-wicking materials and maximum coverage are all factors that you should consider when shopping for the perfect bra. A girl needs all the extra support she can get! Can I get an Amen?
