What to wear to Interviews | South Africa

After you nailed the telephonic interview and landed yourself an in-person interview (yay you!), you’ve done ample research on the company to confidently answer their questions and you’ve got your questions ready, too, but there’s one thing left to prepare, what are you going to wear?

With company cultures changing and becoming more of a relaxed environment, dress codes are changing, too, so unless you’re a banker, lawyer or going to a funeral, put the suit away.

Here are 5 tips to make sure you’re perfectly geared up for that interview or job you after.

1.Dress to Impress

When it comes to choosing what to wear, you need to keep in mind what kind of job you applied for and it’s important that you do some research on the company so you can get to know a bit more about their culture and dress code.

However, if the employees wear shorts and flip flops on a daily basis, don’t break out your leisurewear just yet, since you’re still an applicant, you need to set a good impression.

If the company seems to be a relaxed, casual environment, gents can opt for something versatile such as chinos and a crisp, undetailed shirt and women can never go wrong with a pencil skirt and a stylish t-shirt that’s free from print.

2. Smelly Business

Another important factor is your scent. It might seem like a fickle thing to consider, but if you smell like you bathed in a perfume factory, it can be really off-putting to your interviewer who might have a really sensitive nose and God forbid, terrible sinuses.

If you really feel uncomfortable without spritzing your favourite scent, just spray once into the air and walk through it, it should leave a light veil of perfume without being overwhelming.

3. Beauty Is In the Eye Of The Beholder

Ladies, we know how much fun it is to glam up, but remember that you’re going to a workplace so keep your makeup suited to the occasion. If you want to go the whole nine yards, do so with neutral hues and opt for looks such as a very subtle eyeshadow application and nude lips, also, the doughnut frosting highlight needs a day off today.

4. Accessorise, but Be Wise

So you’ve bought a flashy new watch and you can’t help, but wear it daily – this day is not one of those days. Keep your accessories to a minimum so you don’t come across as overdone and Christmas tree-like. Also, too many accessories can seem tacky, immature and definitely unprofessional.

5. Great Hair, Don’t Care

Finally, when it comes to hair care, clean, fresh hair is always a good option. Make sure it’s kept neatly out of your face or frames your face in a way that doesn’t leave you looking like a constant head banger.

So now that you look the part, proving yourself will be a piece of cake!
