Sneaker Trends For Men | South Africa

We’re all suckers for a good comeback, as well as partial to capitalist attempts to sell us our fondest memories of a ‘better’ bygone time, and at that point of intersection you get retro sneakers gone trendy. Every year sees a new, or old, model anointed by those in the know as the sneaker to be seen in, so we’ve put together this list of the top 5 sneakers to wear this summer or you can view our top sneaker trends.

Nike Cortez

Launched 45 years ago, this running shoe has been worn by everyone from the iconic Farah Fawcett, to fictional hero, Forrest Gump, to Bella Hadid and the cool kid next door. Its vintage design makes for a pleasant respite to the court sneaker style that has dominated the fashion trends scene for the last two years, while its seemingly endless colourways allows you to hold down any retro look. We love Nike’s Cortez so much, we decided to dedicate a whole post to it – read it here

Nike VaporMax

On the flip side Nike’s latest offering hints at the future with translucent air soles and flyknit uppers that are so light you might forget you’re wearing shoes (which wouldn’t quite happen given how awestruck onlookers would be spotting you wearing these trendsetting kicks).

Vans x Thrasher

A titan in its own right, the Vans brand has delivered us some of the most beloved sneaker silhouettes, including the Old Skool high- and low-tops and the slip-on. All three get a slight makeover this season courtesy of skate bible, Thrasher Magazine, which has been repped in various ways for a few seasons now by fashion’s glitterati.

Reebok Classic

Keeping it retro, Reebok has dug into its archives to revive a running favourite of yesteryear – its Classic Leather. Debuted during the brand’s heyday in the ‘80s, these shoes left an indelible impression on the streetwear scene and return this time around to complement the same and even dressier looks.

Converse All Stars

While arguably the one shoe on this list that never truly goes out of style, the humble All Star has a designer collaboration with Jonathan Anderson to thank for the renewed interest around it. The designer sent down a slew of colourful and glittering All Stars down the runway to complement his normcore SS18 collection, which means you can expect the fashion set to follow suit come summer.

adidas Superstars

This one comes as no surprise. Arguably the most iconic silhouette known to the brand, the Adidas Superstar is easily recognised by its legendary signature shell-toe and bold three stripe detailing. First created in 1969 as a basketball shoe, this famous adidas sneaker has Run DMC to thank for its popularity.
