The dresses you’ll want to live in this summer

Yves Saint Laurent was channelling the fashion gods when he said “I have learned that what is important in a dress is the person who is wearing it.” This summer we’ve got all the dresses, as well as styling tips galore — but pulling off the look is down to you and only you, darling!

The cut-out dress

Like a gap in the clouds spilling sunshine all over your skin, the cut-out dress is (in our humble opinion) this season’s must-have item.

We’re loving the double-triangular ribcage cut-out, but could an asymmetrical gap be this season’s boldest choice?

How to style it

Three words: keep… it… simple! We’re serious about this one. Let the cut-out sections be the star of this show, opting for a delicate strappy sandal or some vintage mules.

The micro-mini dress

Think mini dress, and then head north. The micro-mini is about as breathable as a summer dress can get, while simultaneously being a carefree statement toward anyone who argues for limitations when it comes to more sultry styles.

How to style it

When it comes to the micro-mini we say go all in. These are versatile garments that can be paired with just about any trendy shoe, be they sneakers, combat boots, platforms or sandals. Lately, we’re all for micro-minis paired with retro-style go-go boots — groovy baby!

The maxi dress

“Oh, do you love it? I just got it!” — said everyone wearing a maxi dress, ever!

The maxi offers that one-and-done, effortless look ranging from Mediterranean goddess right through to African queen. No further intro needed.

How to style it

Patterned and printed maxis are best paired with monotoned essentials: shoes, hat and bag. One can get more creative with more basic maxis; play around with a belt, oversized sunnies, and chunkier shoes!

The T-shirt/tunic dress

There’s nothing worse than dense fabric clinging to you on sticky summer days. The T-Shirt dress is a staple item for every wardrobe, as well as the epitome of versatility.

How to style it

For daywear, keep it casual with sneakers or espadrilles and your favourite sunglasses. We also love a denim jacket tied around the waist with this dress! When evening rolls around, ditch the kicks for an open-toed heel, and glasses for a cute Alice band.

The lounge-about-the-house dress

Inspired by reworked cottagecore, the house dress AKA the nap dress is intended for the homebody who plans on dividing their time between Zoom calls and naps.

How to style it

There are no real boundaries when it comes to this dress. When you’re working from home no one’s looking at your feet, so give your attention to your head area. Statement earrings, a chic neck scarf or an Alice band can complete the look.

The shirt dress

Donning a well-tailored, button-down shirt dress in the peak of summer is a public service announcement to all that you are, in fact, cooler than everyone else. Usually made with well-ventilated cotton blends, shirt dresses give you that laid-back island look, even in the middle of a metropolitan.

How to style it

Take this look to the next level with a headscarf, woven basket-style handbag of sorts, and some open-toed kitten heels. The shirt dress works wonderfully with jeans if you want a more casual vibe, and we’re not opposed to the addition of a cropped bodice or bustier atop the final look.
